Abstract

Production of computer hardware accounted for 54.5% of total output in 2008, having increased in dollars by 19% in both the prior two years. Output, however fell by 8% in 2009 the first decline since 2002. In 2008, communications & radar accounted for 19.9% of electronics output but in the wake of the global economic downturn declined by some 20% in 2009 but will rebound and show double-digit growth in 2010. Production of consumer products accounted for 8.5% of total electronics output in 2008, the segment’s share of the total declining due to the much stronger growth being experienced in the computer and communication sectors. Production of colour TVs, after peaking at 8.5 million units in 1996, declined to 4.7 million in 2003, but has since increased and reached 5.8 million units in 2008.
