Abstract
Electronics and in particular communications is a key driver to the Finnish economy the sector accounting for around a third of all industrial related exports. The industry is dominated by the communications sector, the country a global leader in both fixed and wireless products. Together the two product groups accounted for 78% of output in 2006. In contrast, computer products accounted for just under 3% of production in 2006.
After a decline of 7.4% in 2004, the radio communications sector rebounded in 2005 with growth of 15.9% on the back of surging exports. However, the up-turn was short-lived with production declining by 1.2% in 2006 and with an increasing proportion of mobile phone and network infrastructure production being undertaken offshore, output is expected to show double-digit declines in both 2006 and 2007. Production of telecommunications products also declined falling by 7.3% in 2006, this following a decline of 5.5% in the prior year. Output is expected to fall by around 5% in both 2007 and 2008.
