After peaking in 2000 electronics output declined for the sixth consecutive year in 2006 falling by a further 11.1%. This compared to declines of 10.4% in 2005 and 9.6% in 2004. The decline in output reflects the shift in production to mainland China as Hong Kong companies look to regain competitiveness lost to rising personnel costs. The trend to migrate manufacturing to China will continue resulting in further declines in electronics output in both 2007 and 2008.
Worldwide Hong Kong is ranked 35th in terms of electronics production and is the 28thlargest market.
