emarketforecasts - Ireland

Abstract

After peaking in 2000 electronics output declined by 5.5% in 2001, 16.5% in 2002 and 11.6% in 2003 before showing growth of 2.4% in 2004 and 2.1% in 2005. This is forecast to accelerate to 2.8% and 3.1% in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Despite three years of declining output the computer sector rebounded in 2004 with growth of 6.8%, the increase primarily in response to rising exports of complete systems. Growth slowed in 2005 but is forecast to increase by 3% in both 2006 and 2007. Computing accounted for 56% of total production in 2004 and with declining output elsewhere in Europe the country has become on of the leading producers in Western Europe . The country is also an important producer of components ranked fourth in Western Europe . Ireland ’s medical electronics sector is also showing strong growth and accounted for 10% of the total in 2005, up from 1% in 1996.

A recent success has been the sharp increase in the medical electronics sector which has increased from just under 1% of total electronics output in 1996 to 8.7% in 2006, this despite production declining by 9.6% during the year. Production is forecast to rebound in 2007 and 2008 with growth of around 4% a year.
