Abstract
Output of the Malaysian electronics industry fell by 5.5% in 2008 this following a more modest decline of 1.6% in 2007. The electronics industry is Malaysia’s leading industrial sector accounting for 29.3% of manufacturing output, 55.9% of exports and 29.8% of employment (296,870 people) in 2008. Electronic components accounted for 42% of electronics output in 2008. Malaysia is one of the world’s leading centres for semiconductor packaging and assembly, output for the key semiconductor sector however has shown double-digit falls in both 2008 and 2009 in response to the decline in the global semiconductor market. Output is forecast to re-bound in 2010 as the semiconductor market recovers with growth of 22%.
