Abstract
In local currency the output of the Malays ian electronics industry increased by 7.2% in 2006. This followed an increase of 7.7% in 2005, 11.7% in 2004 and 6.4% in 2003 and two years of decline in 2002 and 2001 when output fell by 2% and 13%, respectively. The electronics and electrical industry is Malaysia ’s leading industrial sector. In 2006 it employed some 462,000 people or 43% of total employment in the manufacturing sector and contributed 62% of total manufactured exports.
Electronic components accounted for 43% of electronics output in 2006. Malaysia is one of the world’s leading centres for semiconductor packaging and assembly, output for the key semiconductor sector increasing by 3.6% in 2006 and by a further 4.9% in 2007. Semiconductor output is forecast to increase by 2.3% in 2008 the lower growth due to the weaker global market.
