Abstract
After falling by 10.3% in 2008 due to lower output in the key consumer audio and component segments and a sharp reduction in computer production output declined by 34.7% in 2009. The fall in 2009 was the combination of the global downturn and the closure of Qimonda’s semiconductor plant following the German company’s insolvency. Following the rebound in the global economy in 2010 output increased by 5.3% but will ease in 2011 as demand slows in particular in the electronic component segment. Portugal is a major producer of automotive infotainment products with some 7.4 million units produced in 2009 for export, down from 8.2 million and 8.8 million units in 2008 and 2007, respectively. The decline in 2008 and 2009 reflected the sharp downturn in automobile production in the final months of 2008 and in the first half of 2009.
