emarketforecasts - Singapore
Abstract
The Singapore electronics sector employed 90,933 people in 2007, 22.8% of manufacturing employment. Of this the semiconductor sector accounted for 40,270, computer peripherals 15,250, data storage 15,234, infocom and consumer electronics 10,142 and other electronic modules and components 10,037. Electronics remains one of the most important sectors of Singapore ’s manufacturing industry accounting for an estimated 31% of overall manufacturing output in 2007. The sector also accounted for 47% of non-oil domestic exports in 2006; however this is in contrast to 1998 when electronics accounted for 60% of total exports.
After four years of growth electronics output fell by 3.4% in 2006 growth in the semiconductor sector unable to offset declines in the computing, communications and consumer segments. The on-going weakness in the computer segment will be the primary factor in the modest 0.7% decline in electronics output in 2007 and 2008.
