Abstract
The manufacture of semiconductors is a major industry in South Korea and in 2008 semiconductors accounted for 37% of total output. In 2009, output fell by 5.1% a marked improvement in the demand for memory chips in the second half of the year offsetting a weak start to the year. With memory driving growth in the global semiconductor market in the first half of 2010 production is forecast to increase by 28.8% for the year as a whole. Production of communications and radar equipment is being driven by mobile phones, South Korean companies Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics holding second and third positions globally in 2009 with estimated shipments of 227 million and 125 million, respectively. With both Samsung and LG gaining market share in 2008 output is estimated to have increased by 14.9% in 2009 and followed growth of 6.2% a year earlier. Output declined by forecasted 8% in 2009 but is forecast to show double-digit growth as the market re-bounds.
