emarketforecasts - Sweden
Abstract
In 2006, total electronics production fell by an estimated 5.2% and compared to growth of 3.1% a year earlier and 8.1% in 2004. In contrast to the prior two years, when exports in the communications segment offset continued weakness across other sectors, the Swedish electronics was impacted by lower exports, particularly in the communications and radar segment.
The Swedish electronics industry is driven by the production of radio communications and telecommunications equipment and in 2006 the two sectors accounted for 70% of total output, down marginally from 71% a year earlier and the reported 76% in 2000.
Production of radio communications equipment fell by an estimated 10.9% in 2006 and followed three years of single digit growth. The decline in 2006 reflected a slowdown in exports as an increasing proportion of production is transferred offshore. Despite declining in 2006, in contrast telecommunications output fell by only 1.7% and followed robust growth of 8.4% in 2005 and a more impressive 22.3% reported in 2004. Production across both the fixed and wireless segments will decline in both 2007 and 2008 as manufacturers continue to look to reduce costs by moving production to lower cost locations and closer to the faster growing emerging markets.
