Country Reports: Asia

Excluding Japan, China dominates the Asian electronics industry and globally the country the major producing country with an estimated share of 38% in 2019 and up from 29% in 2011. Although China will maintain its position as the largest producing country it is facing increasing competition from lower cost countries, most notably Vietnam, and the recent move by the leading OEMs/ODMs and EMS companies to re-evaluate their global manufacturing footprint in the wake of the US China trade war. Other Asian countries, in particular those with a leading position in the global semiconductor industry - South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore -, play a significant role although after two years of surging growth the downturn in the semiconductor market resulted in falling output in 2019. Despite COVID-19 demand for memory and foundry services will boost production across these countries in 2020. India, with its vast domestic market and “Made-in-India” initiative, will provide significant market opportunities although the required investment in infrastructure will be pivotal to the growth of the industry.

The Asia Pacific electronics industry has been built primarily on foreign investment and many countries are finding it increasingly difficult to compete for low-cost assembly. As a result, governments in countries such as Malaysia and Singapore are looking to focus on higher value products.

After increasing by 5.0% in 2017 electronics output in Japan is estimated to have declined by a modest 0.6% in 2018 and a more substantial 9.1% in 2019. In 2019, growth in the computer segment was offset by falling output in the broader industrial, communications, consumer and component segments. Although, COVID-19 will put downward pressure on the industry in 2020 based on official figures for the first five months of the year overall output assuming a gradual recovery over the course of the remainder of the year will decline by 3.9%.

Similar to the US and countries in Western Europe, Japan has been impacted by the migration of production to low-cost locations. Between 2000 and 2019 electronics output has declined by an estimated 57.3%.

Currently individual reports can be supplied electronically for the key countries within the Asian electronics industry although we can supply information on other countries covered within the Yearbook database on demand.
