Output in the Danish electronics industry increased by 5.1% in 2018 and based on government data by an estimated 0.8% in 2019. Industrial, increased for the sixth consecutive year led by the medical segment, although growth in medical equipment eased to 6.8% after four years of double-digit growth while the production of control and instrumentation declined by 3.8%. The production of hearing aids increased by 6.8% in 2019 and although still robust output eased from the double-digit growth witnessed over the previous four years. In total, hearing aids accounted for 86.6% of medical output and 35.6% of overall electronics equipment production. Control, test and measuring equipment accounted for and estimated 30.7% of total production in 2019 and represented the second largest sector in the Danish electronics industry. Production increased by 2.6% in 2018, but declined by 3.8% in 2019 as the slowdown in the global economy impacted demand in the country’s main export markets. Demand is forecast to weaken significantly as a result of COVID-19 with initial forecasts pointing to a decline of 13.0% with the possibility of an even greater fall if economic activity fails to pick-up in the second half of the year. Components accounted for 16.7% of electronics output in 2019, primarily through the production of loudspeakers and in particular for use in hearing aids. In 2019, loudspeakers accounted for 19.9% of total electronic component production although output declined by 25.8% during the year. Production of loudspeakers is forecast to decline by a further more modest 7.0% in 2020.
