The decision, primarily by Nokia, to transfer the production of mobile phone and wireless and fixed communications equipment to low cost locations, has resulted in the output for the communications and radar segment falling by 93% between 2005 and 2016. In the same period, output within the telecoms segment declined by 74%. The changes in the structure of Finland’s communications sector has seen its share of overall electronics output fall from 78% in 2005 to an estimated 29% in 2017. Production of control and instrumentation increased by 3.4% in 2016 and is forecast to increase by a further 5.0% and 4.0% in 2017 and 2018, respectively on the back of stronger exports.  Medical, which accounted for 20.9% of electronics output in 2016, posted growth of 7.4% during the year but on the back of weaker exports is forecast to decline by 2% in 2017 before posting a recovery in 2018.
