The decision, primarily by Nokia, to transfer the production of mobile phone and wireless and fixed communications equipment to low cost locations, has resulted in the output for the communications and radar segment falling by 94% between 2005 and 2016. In the same period, output within the telecoms segment declined by 74%.  The changes in the structure of Finland’s communications sector has seen its share of overall electronics output fall from 78% in 2005 to an estimated 29% in 2016. Production of control and instrumentation increased by 3.4% in 2015 and is forecast to increase by a further 2.2% and 2.0% in 2016 and 2017, respectively on the back of stronger exports. Medical, which accounted for 20% of electronics output in 2015, posted growth of 3.2% on par with the prior year and followed a double-digit decline in 2013. The medical sector is expected to show further growth of around 4.5% in 2016 and then by 4.0% in 2017 as the sector benefits from the expected improvement in the global demand.
