Output in the Finnish electronics industry increased by 4.3% in 2019, a significant improvement on 2018 when production declined by 3.7%, growth being driven by the industrial segment. The decision, primarily by Nokia and the former electronics manufacturing service provider Elcoteq, to transfer the production of both mobile phones and communications equipment to low cost locations resulted in output for the communications segment to fall by 91% between 2005 and 2016 from Euro 7,111 million to Euro 660 million. Production however has since stabilised and is forecast, in the longer term to benefit from the emergence of new products related to the Internet of Things and 5G. The changes in the structure of Finland’s communications sector has seen its share of overall electronics production fall from 78.5% in 2005 to an estimated 29.1% in 2019. Finland produces a wide range of industrial automation and measuring equipment, components, and many highly specialised products in areas such as medical electronics. Finnish strategy has been to specialise and concentrate on narrow product ranges in which it can achieve a substantial market share. There is a trend towards new production units outside Finland and the purchase of foreign enterprises. Production of control and instrumentation increased by 4.2% in 2017, 6.8% in 2018 and 8.2% in 2019 but is forecast to decline by 12.5% in 2020 as COVID-19 reduces demand in the country’s main trading partners. Medical, which accounted for 17.4% of electronics output in 2019, posted growth of 10.2% during the year and is expected to increase by a further 5.0% in 2020 with growth in equipment essential to treating the pandemic offset by weaker demand in other areas of the market.
