After dipping to Euro 20.95 billion in 2014, its lowest level since 2000, output in the French electronics industry posted five years of consecutive growth to reach Euro 24.0 billion in 2019. Production, however, is set to decline by 7.4% in 2020 following the coronavirus outbreak and with significant downside risks this could be approaching double-digits if measures to contain the pandemic continue through into the second half of the year. The French electronics is dominated by the production of fixed and wireless communications, the two product groups accounting for 19.7% of total output in 2019, down from around 37% at the height of the boom in 2000. The country is also a leading producer of radar, navigation and defence electronics the sector accounting for 27.7% of total output in 2019. In the short- to medium-term the impact of COVID-19 on the French defence sector is expected to be less pronounced than commercial aviation. This is primarily due to the nature of defence programmes where budgets were allocated prior to the pandemic and many projects are critical to national defence. In the longer-term however, defence contractors are expected to see slowing demand as national governments seek to reduce deficits and control expenses. The production of computer equipment has declined year on year since 2000 a trend which is expected to continue. By the end of 2020, output is forecast to account for 2.7% of total electronics output down from 17.6% in 2000 the sector experiencing declines of 6.3% in 2018 and 3.1% in 2019. Electronic component production, despite the recent closure of a number of manufacturing plants, accounted for 25.8% of electronics production in 2019. After benefiting from higher average selling prices, fuelled by component shortages and buoyant demand in 2017 and 2018 both the semiconductor and passive components segments declined in 2019 a trend which will accelerate as production is lowered in-line with demand as a result of COVID-19.
