After declining by 5.0% in 2013 and a further 4.5% in 2014 electronics output increased by 3.2% in 2015 with growth across all sectors apart from consumer and passive components. Based on preliminary data production was flat in 2016 but should recover in 2017. Control and instrumentation and communications and radar accounted for 26% and 18.5% of output respectively in 2016 while components accounted for 30%. Output for the control and instrumentation sector increased by 0.5% in 2015, after a growth of 1.6% in the prior year, and is forecast to accelerate to 3.5% in 2016 and 3.7% in 2017 as the economic environment in Europe and globally improves. The country is home to a large number of small and medium sized enterprises serving both the domestic and export markets. The medical sector accounted for an estimated 6.5% of electronic production in 2015. After the double-digit growth in 2015, with growth in both medical imaging and diagnostics, output declined by a forecasted 2.0% in 2016 but is expected to recover in 2017. Leading indigenous medical companies include Bracco Imaging, DiaSorin and the Esaote Group. In 2015, the production of telecommunications equipment increased for the first time since 2010 and although output fell by a forecasted 1.0% in 2016 it is expected to post low single-digit growth in the period to 2020. Production of radio communications declined by 4.9% in 2014, posted growth of 0.4% in 2015 but declined by 1.6% in 2016.
