After increasing by 3.5% in 2017 growth in electronics output eased to 0.1% in 2018 and then entered into negative territory in 2019 declining by 2.3% in response to weaker domestic and foreign demand. Control and instrumentation and communications and radar accounted for 27.3% and 19.3% of output respectively in 2019 while components accounted for 31.1%. Driven by exports output for the control and instrumentation sector increased by 3.0% in 2018, and compared to growth of 9.4% in 2017. Production, however declined in 2019 by 4.0% in part due to weaker domestic demand but also a slowdown in key export markets over the course of the year. The outlook for 2020 remains uncertain and will depend on how the coronavirus outbreak develops over the course of the year. Output is currently forecast to decline by 16.0% for the year as a whole. The medical sector accounted for an estimated 6.3% of electronic production in 2019. After declining by 1.2% in 2018, production increased by 4.0% in 2019 on the back of stronger demand in the domestic market and robust export growth. With the focus on products for the treatment of the pandemic growth is expected to edge down to 2.5% in 2020. After being stable in 2018, the telecommunications segment posted growth 1.9% in 2019 but is forecast to decline by 5.5% in 2020 on the back of supply chain disruptions, the inability for engineers to upgrade networks and weaker demand across various product segments. Growth however is forecast to pick-up over the course of 2021 then gradually accelerate over the period to 2023. Opportunities related to the IoT is expected to provide a boost to growth over the period. The production of radio communications and radar increased by around 2.2% in 2017 and 2.6% in 2018 but eased to 0.6% in 2019, growth in radar and navigation offset by stable production for radio communications. Both segments are expected to decline in 2020 although the production of defence equipment will be shielded to some extent from the impact of the pandemic.
