Following two years of modest growth in 2011 and 2012 output declined by 2.9% in 2013, by 3.8% in 2014 and 0.5% in 2015 on the back of the gradual improvement in the domestic economy during the year. Control and instrumentation and communications and radar accounted for 27% and 18% of output respectively in 2015 while components accounted for 31%. Production of office equipment, once a key driver to the Italian electronics industry, now accounts for under 1% of total electronics output. Output for the control and instrumentation sector increased by 1.9% in 2014, after a modest decline of 0.5% in the prior year, and is forecast to accelerate to 2.5% in 2015 and 3.8% in 2016 as the economic environment in Europe and globally improves. The country is home to a large number of small and medium sized enterprises serving both the domestic and export markets. The medical sector accounted for an estimated 5.8% of electronic production in 2015 output increasing by a forecasted 2.4% and followed a decline of 3.1% in 2014 and 1.7% in 2013. The production of telecommunications equipment fell for the fifth year running in 2015 and is expected to decline by a further 1.0% in 2016.
