After declining by 4.7% in 2014 electronics output increased by 4.6% in 2015, in part due to a double-digit increase in computer output, before slowing with production increasing by 2.4% in 2016 and by a more modest 0.4% in 2017 but should recover in 2018. Output for the control and instrumentation sector increased by 3.5% in 2016, after a growth of 0.5% in the prior year, but declined by an estimated 2% in 2017 on the back of weaker exports. Production is expected to return to growth in 2018 with growth forecast at 2.0%. The medical sector accounted for an estimated 6.2% of electronic production in 2017. After the double-digit growth in 2015, with growth in both medical imaging and diagnostics, output declined by 2.8% in 2016 before posting growth of 2.4% in 2017 with this forecast to edge up to 2.6% in 2018. In 2016, the production of telecommunications equipment declined by 1.1% and followed growth of 2.3% in the prior year, the first increase in output since 2010. Production declined by an estimated 1.0% in 2017 but is forecast to increase by 1.9% in 2018 and then gradually accelerate to 2.5% at the end of the forecast period. Production of radio communications increased by 1.8% in 2016 but, in part due to lower exports, declined by an estimated 2.0% in 2017. Growth should resume in 2018 and although output is expected to be impacted by the slowdown in the economy in 2019 is forecast to increase by between 2-3% in 2020 and 2021.
