Country Report - Norway
Output for the Norwegian electronics industry increased by 7.5% in 2019 and compared to the previous year’s growth of 5.3%. An 8.6% increase in electronics equipment output in 2019 offset by a 4.1% decline in electronics component production. After declining by 3.1% in 2020, electronics output is forecast to recover from the pandemic and increase by 4.0% in 2021. Products for Norway's important offshore oil and gas sector have created major opportunities for electronics in the field of control and instrumentation and as a result this sector, the industry’s largest, has become increasingly well-established on the international market. Production increased by 4.4% and 4.2% in 2018 and 2019, respectively before declining by 7.1% in 2020 as a result of weaker demand as the spread of COVID-19, in particular on the oil and gas sector, impacted both domestic and international demand. Output is expected to recover in 2021 and then accelerate over the period to 2024. As highlighted, Norwegian companies have a strong presence globally in the supply of fixed and wireless communications and radar and navigation equipment (including defence). The segment accounted for 30.6% of electronics output in 2020 of which the majority, 80.4%, was related to the communications and radar segment. Following an increase by 6.0% in 2018 and by a further 6.7% in 2019 output declined by a modest 0.2% in 2020. The country’s position as a supplier of defence equipment helping offset the impact of COVID-19.
