Electronics output in Spain increased by 1.9% in 2019, the sixth consecutive year of growth up from the 1.2% in the prior year but down from the 4.3% reported in 2017 and 4.4% in 2016. Production, however, is forecast to decline by 7.5% in 2020 although there remains, significant downside risks to the outlook. Once one of the major sectors of the Spanish electronics industry – in 2000 it accounted for 36% of the total – the output of telecommunications equipment has stabilised since 2014. Following growth of 3.3% in 2018, output increased by an estimated 2.1% in 2019 but is expected to contract by 5.0% in 2020. Although output is expected to be impacted by COVID-19 it will be partly offset by the demand for equipment to support the increased growth in data. The communications and radar segment, is dominated by the production of radar and navigational aids the two product groups accounting for 69.9% of the total in 2019. After posting growth of 2.8% in 2019 output is forecast to decline by 6.0% in 2020, the fall primarily due to the weakening demand from the commercial aviation segment. The industrial segment was the main driver of growth in 2019 increasing by 5.1%, with a double-digit growth in control and instrumentation and a 5.0% increase in medical offset by a 3.8% decline in industrial. The impact of COVID-19 is expected to lead to double-digit declines for both control and instrumentation and industrial while medical is forecast to increase by 3.0% with the emphasis on products required to support the treatment of the pandemic. Although stable in 2019, this following the 4.4% decline in the prior year, the production of computer equipment is forecast to decline by 11.0% in 2020 and then track down over the period to 2023.
