Output for the Spanish electronics industry increased by 7.4% in 2014, the first increase since 2005 and only the second year of growth since the peak in 2000. Output is forecast is forecast to increase by a further 4.2% in 2015 and 3.5% in 2016 on the back of improving domestic activity and demand from key export markets. Telecommunications still plays a major role in Spain's electronics industry but has been hit hard by the downturn in the sector since 2000. In 2014, it accounted for 14.5% of the total down from 36% in 2000. After declining by 14.8% in 2013 output increased by 6.7% in 2014 and is forecast to show further growth in both 2015 and 2016. After declining by 1.9% in 2012 the production of communications and radar equipment increased by 1.9% in 2013 and then by a significant 26% in 2014 with strong growth both in radar and navigation and wireless communications. Although growth is expected to ease in 2015 and 2016 it is forecast to remain relatively robust at 8.0% and 5.0%, respectively. Growth in the Spanish electronics industry is also being driven by the industrial segment. In 2015, the control and instrumentation segment posted forecasted growth of 10%, medical 3.4% and industrial 3.0%. Combined the industrial segment accounted for 24.9% of output in 2015 with this forecast to increase to 25.4% in 2016. Computer equipment accounted for 10.1% of output in 2014 production on par with the prior year and reflecting improved business and consumer confidence is expected to plateau at similar levels in 2015 and 2016.
