In 2016, electronics production for the Spanish electronics industry increased by 4.4%, slightly down on the 5.8% and 6.1% increase reported in the prior two years. Output is forecast is forecast to increase by a further 2.6% in both 2017 and 2018 on the back of the continued increase in domestic activity and demand from key export markets. Although downside risks remain, including competition from lower cost locations, output is forecast to show modest growth over the period to 2021. Telecommunications still plays a major role in Spain's electronics industry but has been hit hard by the downturn in the sector since 2000. In 2016, it accounted for 14.8% of the total down from 36% in 2000. After declining by 14.8% in 2013 output has increased year on year and posted growth of 4.7% in 2016 and by a forecasted 4.0% in 2017. Similar growth is projected for 2018. In 2014, the production of communications and radar equipment increased by a significant 26% with strong growth both in radar and navigation and wireless communications. Growth eased in over the period to 2017 but remained relatively robust at 6.7%, 4.9% and 3.8%, respectively. The production of radar and navigation equipment accounted for an estimated 74% of the segment’s total in 2017 and over the period to 2021 should benefit from the on-going growth in the aerospace segment and the recovery in defence spending over the forecast period. The development of the Spanish electronics industry is also being driven by the industrial segment. However, in 2017 based on preliminary data weaker exports will see the production of control and instrumentation decline by a forecasted 2.0% before rebounding in 2018. This will be offset by growth in both the medical and industrial segments. Combined the industrial segment accounted for 23.7% of electronics output in 2017.
