Control and instrumentation, and consumer goods (mainly watches) are the two sectors of industry which dominate Swiss electronics output. Watch production accounted for 23.5% of total production in 2020, down from 28.3% in the prior due to lower output as a result of the pandemic, and control and instrumentation 35.9%. Electronics production declined by 1.6% in 2019, down from the prior year’s growth of 3.3% and is forecast to have fallen by a further 10.5% in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic and, in particular, the negative impact on the watch industry. In 2019, the watch industry declined in value terms by 25.4% on the back of weaker exports as a result of the pandemic induced sharp decline in activity for the luxury goods sector as a whole, and for the watch industry in particular. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry in value terms Switzerland is the world’s largest exporter of watches, primarily due to the country’s dominance in high value watches. In 2020, it was estimated that some 8.3 million electronic watches were exported (2019: 13.4 million/2018:16.2 million). From the low-point in the second quarter year output picked in the second half of 2020 with the momentum expected to continue in 2021 as the impact of the pandemic fades. Output in the control and instrumentation sector increased by over 7.0% in both 2017 and 2018 but posted a modest decline of 0.5% in 2019 as demand eased during the year in line with the slowdown in the global economy. The impact of COVID-19 resulted in production falling by 4.2% in 2020 as demand declined on the back of weaker domestic demand and lower exports, in particlaur in the first half of the year. Production is forecast to increase by 4.2% in 2021 as deamnd recovers globally. Medical, which posted double-digit falls in both 2017 and 2018, increased by 15.8% in 2019 on the back of a surge in exports but declined by 2.4% in 2020. Growtth in medical equipment during the year, and in particular products to support the treatment of the panademic offset by a sharp deline in the production of hearing aids.
