Electronics production declined by 1.9% in 2019, down from the prior year’s growth of 3.4% and is forecast to fall by a further 9.8% in 2020 as the spread of the coronavirus globally impacts demand. In 2019, the watch industry declined in value terms by 10.0% on the back of weaker exports. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry in value terms Switzerland is the world’s largest exporter of watches, primarily due to the country’s dominance in high value watches. In 2019, it was estimated that some 13.4 million electronic watches were exported (2018: 16.2 million/2017: 17.1 million)). Looking forward the Swiss watch industry is entering a period of transition with traditional manufacturers facing increasing competition as increasing number of smart watches enter the market. Output in the control and instrumentation sector increased by 3.0% in 2019, down from the prior year’s increase of 7.1%,and 7.4% in 2018 and 2017, respectively. The impact of COVID-19 is expected to result in production falling by 12.9% in 2020 as demand both domestically and in key export markets plummett. Medical, which posted double-digit falls in both 2017 and 2018, increased by a modest 2.0% in 2019 and is forecast to increase by a further 2.8% in 2020 with, as in other countries, the focus on equipment to support the treatment of the panademic. The manufacture of microelectronics and electronic components is also important in Switzerland accounting for 14.8% of output in 2019. Specialised products dominate this sector, due not only to relentless competition with standard items, but also to the specialised applications in successful Swiss products, such as new electronic watches.
