The strength of Switzerland's electronics industry lies in a small range of niche products, with high added value. Control and instrumentation, and consumer goods (mainly watches) are the two sectors of industry, which dominate Swiss electronics output. Watch production is the major industry accounting for 33.5% of total production with control and instrumentation having a 28% share in 2016. Electronics production declined by 5.0% in 2015 and compared to growth of 1.4% in the prior year. During the year a number of companies looked to utilise overseas operations to offset the ending of the peg for the Swiss franc against the euro. Output is forecast to have declined by a further 2.0% in 2016 but is expected to increase by 1.6% in 2017. In 2015, the key watch industry declined by 5.0% on the back of weaker exports. According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry in value terms Switzerland is the world’s largest exporter of watches, primarily due to the country’s dominance in high value watches. In 2015, it was estimated that some 20.4 million watches were exported (2014: 20.6 million). Looking forward the Swiss watch industry is entering a period of transition with traditional manufacturers facing increasing competition as increasing number of smart watches enter the market. Output in the control and instrumentation sector, the second largest with a 28% share, declined by 8.9% in 2015 and by an estimated 2.0% in 2016 but should rebound with growth of 2.2% in 2017. In contrast medical increased by 7.6% in 2015 and by a further 4.0% in 2016.
