Electronics production declined by 3.5% in 2016 and compared to the prior year’s decline of 5.0% and modest growth of 1.4% in 2014. Output is forecast to recover in 2017 with growth of 2.9% and then increase by a further 2.7% in 2018.  In 2016, the key watch industry declined by 8.9% on the back of weaker exports. Output in the control and instrumentation sector declined by 0.1% in 2016, a significant improvement on the prior year’s decline of 8.9%, and gathered some momentum in 2017 increasing by a forecasted 1.5% a trend which is expected to continue in 2018 with growth of 2.0%. Medical, which had increased by 7.6% in 2015, declined by 7.1% in 2016 but is forecast to recover in 2017 and 2018 with growth of 2.5% and 4.0%, respectively. The manufacture of microelectronics and electronic components is also important in Switzerland accounting for 13.4% of output in 2016. Specialised applications in successful Swiss products, such as new electronic watches, dominate the sector.
