In 2019, electronics output posted growth of 0.8% on par with the prior year years level and a significant improvement on the negative growth reported between 2012 and 2017 when electronics output was dragged down by the restructuring of the Swedish communications industry.  Electronics output is expected to decline by 7.1% in 2020 although significant downside risks related to COVID-19 could lead to a more substantial decline. The Swedish electronics industry remains centred on the production of fixed and wireless infrastructure equipment the two sectors accounting for 42.1% of electronics output in 2019. Although, output declined for the eighth successive the pace of contraction has moderated to -1.7%. Production of wireless communications equipment declined by 2.0% in 2019, and compared to the prior year’s fall of 2.9% and the more substantial fall of 9.6% in 2017. Telecommunications output has followed a similar trend with output declining by an estimated 1.3% in 2019, 2.3% in 2018 and 8.7% in 2017. Telecommunications accounted for 21.7% of electronics output in 2019 and wireless communications (excluding radar and navigation) 20.4%. Radar and navigation accounted for 10.1% of electronics output in 2019, on par with the prior year. Saab is the dominant company in the sector although there are a number of smaller and medium sized companies as well as overseas manufacturers including BAE Systems. The other predominant sectors are control and instrumentation with a 30.8% share in 2019, up from 7.5% in 2000, and components with a 11.7% share. Computer equipment accounted for only 1.3% of the total, while consumer production was negligible. In 2019, the control and instrumentation segment posted growth of 7.8% and compared to 5.3% in 2018 and a decline of 5.6% in 2017 when output was impacted by a fall in the production of industrial and process control on the back of a sharp drop in exports during the year. Declining demand, both domestically and in key export markets as a result of COVID-19 is expected to lead to a double-digit decline in 2020.
