In 2019, electronics output increased by 0.7% up from growth of 0.4% in the prior year and a significant improvement on the negative growth reported between 2012 and 2017 when electronics output was dragged down by the restructuring of the Swedish communications industry. Electronics output declined by 5.1% in 2020 and is forecast to rebound in 2021 as the impact of the pandemic fades with growth of 3.6%. The Swedish electronics industry remains centred on the production of fixed and wireless infrastructure equipment the two sectors accounting for 41.5% of electronics output in 2020. Output declined for the ninth successive year in 2020 and at -3.2% at slightly higher rate than the prior year (2019: -1.7%) as a result of the pandemic. Production of wireless communications equipment declined by 3.1% in 2020, and compared to the prior year’s fall of 2.0%. Telecommunications output has followed a similar trend with output declining by an estimated 3.4% in 2020 and 1.3% in 2019. Telecommunications accounted for 21.4% of electronics output in 2020 and wireless communications (excluding radar and navigation) 20.2%. Radar and navigation accounted for 11.4% of electronics output in 2020, on par with the prior year. Saab is the dominant company in the sector although there are a number of smaller and medium sized companies as well as overseas manufacturers including BAE Systems. The other predominant sectors are control and instrumentation with a 29.5% share in 2020, up from 7.5% in 2000, and components with a 11.2% share. Computer equipment accounted for only 1.2% of the total, while consumer production was negligible. In 2019, the control and instrumentation segment on the back of a sharp rise in exports posted an increase of 11.5% and compared to growth of 5.3% in 2018. Declining demand, both domestically and in key export markets as a result of COVID-19 resulted in output declining by 9.2% in 2020 but is forecast to rebound and post growth of 4.3% in 2021.
