Electronics production in Canada increased by an estimated 1.5% in 2019 and compared to growth of 2.7% in the prior year. In response the impact of COVID-19, production is expected to decline by 8.4% in 2020. At 38% communications and radar was the largest sector within the Canadian electronics industry in 2019. After four years of relatively stable output the segment reported growth of 6.9% in 2018 before easing to 2.4% in 2019. Output is forecast to fall by 8.0% in 2020, the sharp decline in demand from the commercial aviation sector a major contributing factor. Control and instrumentation, was the second largest segment accounting for 32.5% of output in 2019. Growth has eased from 9.5% in 2017 to 3.8% and 3.4% in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Output is forecast to decline by 12.0% in 2020 as companies scale back investments in response to weaker economic activity both domestically and in key export markets. Despite the short-term impact of COVID-19, the outlook for the Canadian electronics industry remains unchanged with the focus on the wireless communications, defence and instrumentation sectors. The emphasis will be on medium to low volume complex production.
