Electronics output decreased by 2.2% in 2015 and compared to the previous year’s decline of 0.5% the on-going weakness in the US PC market combined with a sharp fall in mobile phone production for the second consecutive year which was partly offset by growth in LCD TV output. With similar trends expected to continue throughout 2016 electronics output is expected to show a further decline of 1.4% for the year as a whole. Computers, peripherals and parts accounted for 37% of production in 2015. After growth of 6.4% in 2014 weakness in the US and other export markets resulted in output declining by 1.5% in 2015 and by a further 1.5% in 2016. In the medium to longer-term developments in the Mexican electronics industry will continue to be influenced by the US, the country’s main trading partner but also from growth in the domestic market. Production will remain focused on the 3C segment of computing, consumer (TVs) and communications although it is expected that industrial will increase its overall share of production it will remain under 10% of the total over the period to 2019.
