Electronics output decreased by 0.5% in 2016, this despite a significant increase in computer output, and compared to the previous year’s decline of 2.2%. The rebound in the computer segment was offset by a marked decline in LCD TV output and a further fall in mobile phone production. In 2017, output is forecast to decline by 1.4%, a further slight increase in computer output unable to offset further, but more modest, declines in LCD TV and mobile phone production. The uncertainty regards the outcome of the NAFTA negotiations is expected to have a short-term impact on investment in the country, with the possibility that plans to establish a low-cost operation in the country are delayed or in the worst case postponed in favour of expanding or establishing a US presence.
