In addition to a large domestic market Mexico’s lower costs and close proximity to the US has made it a preferred location for low-cost manufacturing not only for companies from the US and Canada but also Asia and Europe. With the US the main export market the Mexican electronics industry is closely linked to developments in the country and in particular for high volume products including PCs, mobile phones and LCD TVs. Electronics output increased by 7.5% in 2017 led by a second year of double-digit growth in computer and related equipment. Growth in 2017 was partly offset by a further fall in mobile phone production. With output in the computer segment expected to ease in 2018 growth is forecast at 3.2% overall growth once again impacted by lower production of mobile phones and a further decline in audio equipment production. Despite the potential offered by the domestic market developments in the Mexican electronics industry will continue to be influenced by the US. As highlighted, the renegotiation of NAFTA, will have a major influence not only on the outlook for the Mexican economy but also developments in the electronics industry.
