Output for the Chinese electronics industry, the world’s largest accounting for well over a third of global production, increased by 4.8% in value terms in 2017 and followed the modest decline of 1.9% in the prior year when growth was impacted by lower demand globally for high volume products in the computer, consumer and communications markets. Growth in 2017 benefited from higher average selling prices as manufactures passed on the higher cost of components, in particular memory. Globally China is a major producer of electronic components and a leading player in the photovoltaic industry. However, the country despite the recent investment in new semiconductor fabs is still reliant on imports for ICs a situation which is not expected to change in the immediate future despite significant investment in new fabs. “Made in China 2025” is expected to play a key role in the development of the electronics sector as the government looks to transition from a manufacturer of volume products, where it is facing increasing competition, to a provider of home-grown products based on advanced technologies. It is expected that China will invest heavily in the technologies to support smart manufacturing.
