After increasing by 2.1% and 2.3% in 2017 and 2018, respectively output declined by 9.8% in 2019 with only industrial and communications and radar posting growth during the year. Output is forecast to decline by a further 1.9% in 2020 modest growth of 0.5% in computing, the largest segment, and medical helping offset declining output across the remainder of the industry. The computer and office equipment segment accounted for 44% of production in 2019, output declining by 8.5% on the back of a sharp decline in exports. Thailand is one of the world’s leading producers of hard disk drives with all the leading manufacturers having operations in the country. The modest growth forecast for 2020 will be supported by demand for hard disks drives to meet the move to work from home, especially in the second quarter of the year. As the impacts of the pandemic continue across many countries in the third quarter and with the potential for a second wave demand could be significantly lower and lead to potential decline in output.  Production of components accounted for 34% of total electronics output in 2019, the segment declining by 11.1% during the year on the back of the slowdown in the global market and falling prices.  Leading companies with manufacturing facilities in the country include Toshiba fellow Japanese company Rohm and the US companies ON Semiconductor and Microchip technology (the former Microsemi site). Growth in the production of components is forecast to decline by 2.4% in 2020 the expected recovery delayed by the outbreak of the pandemic.
